What is a Matrix database?

Hi,

I'm not sure if it is my ignorance or someone trying to pull the wool over my eyes so thought I'd just ask around. Has anybody come across a "Matrix Database" concept and, if so, is there anything intrinsic to this design that makes querying said database difficult in terms of providing reporting outputs to feed other systems?
