How to create a many to many self-join relationship

$
0
0
Hi there,

I have a simple question and cannot find the answer anywhere!

SCENARIO
I have a super type table - Actors (ActorID, category....)
Two sub type tables - People (ActorID, firstname etc...); Organisations (ActorID, name, location etc...)

The entities in the Participants table can relate to each other in numerous ways.
Each relationship will have a relationship type (e.g. works for, married to, family member, business associate, holding company of, etc etc)
Each relationship may have sources (i.e. evidence of this relationship - video, article, anecdotal etc)

I have created a table - Relationship_Actor_Actor (fkActor1ID, fkActor2ID, relationshipType)

How do I express this in visual form and in SQL?

Furthermore, once I introduce 'evidence' into the equation, how would this table fit into the mix?
The Relationship_Actor_Actor table would have a many-to-many relationship with Evidence (i.e. each actor relationship can be evidenced by many sources, each evidence can relate to many actor relationships)
In addition, the Evidence can also relate to other tables in the schema - including Actors (i.e. not just the relationship between actors)

Any help and advice on this one?

Help creating holiday club database, booking system

$

This may be difficult to explain but I will try my best, I have added a few hand drawn diagrams to try and help you visualise what I'm trying to do!

Basically the holiday club I am creating a database for runs for 5 weeks, in these week children can book in to attend any day they want in these 5 weeks. I can't seem to make a form that will allow the user to simply tick if the child wants to be booked into a certain day in a certain week. I could only attempt to do this using lots of new tables with lots of relationships between them (most I think were unnecessary, but this didn't really work!)
These bookings then need to be made into a register, sort of like the second image, but this design is not particually required, if there is a better way of doing this the client is happy to give them a chance. (in this image the red boxes would mean the child has not booked into this day)

If any one has any ideas that may help, all comments will be appreciated, thank you in advanced!

Combine number of months and days to determine new date

$

Hello All!

Am trying to consolidate all these formulas into one. Please see below:

First formula determines an effective date based on a 1/1/2015 hire date with a 6 month waiting period

Code:

DATE(YEAR(A1),MONTH(A1)+B8,DAY(A1))
=12/1/2014

From here I need to determine the last day in the month from the formula above

Code:

EOMONTH(C8,0)
=12/31/2014

Based on the date generated above, need to add an addtional 30 days waiting period

Code:

EOMONTH(A11+29,0)+1
=2/1/2015

Any suggestions greatly appreciated it!

MS Access Auto Populate Form Question

Currently using Access 2010. Have an action item database with a rather simple form that among other things contains a Combo Box for selecting an action item's status (In Progress, Waiting, Deferred, Completed). I'd like to know if it's possible to auto populate a Text Box with the current date whenever an item's status is changed to Completed. The Text Box would stay empty until an item is Completed. Also, the date in the Text Box cannot be changed except to go blank if the status is changed from Completed back to one of the other status selection options in the Combo Box. Thanks very much for any help.

Help me select the right DB software for this simple project!

Hi.

I'm new to the forums, so hope you can all help.

I need to do some pretty basic data work but, despite being good at this stuff once upon a time, I've not had a need to do db work / analysis in this way for a couple of decades so I'm a little rusty on what software is best for this specific use case. I'm looking for something relatively low cost since this is just a piece of analysis I'll be doing for a few hours, once a month.

So, here's the use case.

Each month I receive a list of all of my company's customers (uniquely referenced by their 'account name') and, for each, how much they used our system in that month (number of clicks). So it's basically two columns - the first called 'account name' and the second called 'clicks'.

I'll get one of these files each month. So Nov-14, Dec-14, Jan-15, etc.

The number of rows in the file increases each month as we add new customers to our company. However, we also lose some customers, so some disappear from the report. So, the point is that the list of accounts is not the same each month. And of course, for the accounts that DO appear in multiple months, the number of clicks differs from month to month.

The analysis I'm trying to do is to compare, for a subset of customers (more on that in a minute) the total number of clicks done in a particular month last year to the total number of clicks in the same month this year. i.e. the year-on-year growth in usage of our system by the population as a whole.

The subset of customers should only include customers that had clicks above a certain threshold in BOTH months that I'm comparing - i.e. over 5,000 clicks in Dec-13 and over 5,000 clicks in Dec-14. Doing this means that I filter out the customers that joined during the year (they would have no clicks in Dec-13) and those that left during the year (they would have no clicks in Dec-14). This effectively gives me an 'index' for how customers that have been with us throughout the period have grown their use of the system. Make sense?

So, what I'm looking for is a simple piece of software where I can import the list of customers and clicks each month and it will look up the account name (primary key) and if it already exists, it will add the latest data to that customers row. And if the key doesn't exist it will create a new row for that customer.

I'm sure this is a lot simpler than I'm making it - so please, can you help me out?

Thank you!

James.

The 3rd normal form

There is a property table and its data are listing below:
1. Whether this table is in accordance with The 3rd Normal Form?

2. If we need to search atomic value in「property identification」and the letter list from A to J. The second and fourth codes don't have limitations and the data type about property identification is char(6).
Select *From
Where LEFT ( property identification, 1) BETWEEN "A" AND "J" AND MID( property identification, 3, 3)= "-"

Can everyone please give me some tips about 3rd Normal Form?
How to answer questions one?
I know it needs to satisfy two rules:
1. It satisfies second normal form.
2. Every field and primary key don't have indirect dependence relationship.
Also I can't understand the where clauses in question two.

need help regarding new partnership agreement with software developer

$

Dear Gentlemen,

I was approached by a software developer recently who asked me to become his partner and start a new software development company. The deal is that I finance him and he will create the business software (based on Microsoft SQL Server) which we will both sell together when its complete. I contacted a lawyer to draft a partnership agreement which will protect my rights as an investor and we also agreed that I make payments to him on a monthly basis and in return I will get a copy of the software in progress (Microsoft Visual Studio file) which he calls the "source code". I don't know anything about creating databases or source codes or any of the technical things that revolve around creating a software, so I'd like to understand a little more to make sure that I'm not being duped. My questions are as follows:

1. How can I be sure that the copy which he is giving me is truly the developer copy without any limitations or limited access to any key part of the program?
2. Is there a way that he can license key the program that he's giving me and therefore has the ability to deactivate it from his home at any point he wants?
3. Is there any way that he can make this source code useless at any point he wants remotely?

I appreciate any help I can get from you and any other advice that you might have for me. It sounds like I have trust issues (maybe I do), but since I don't know the person very well I prefer to be on the safe side until our relationship develops as we do business together and eventually earn each others trust.

Regards,

Is it possible to rotate text / fields by 90 degrees in forms?

I was trying to design a form to closely match the format of the page the data is entered from. But some of the fields are vertical - rotated 90 degrees. I can't seem to get Paradox to do this. Is is possible? Am running Paradox 10 in Windows 7.

What Brought Me Here! Class Positions and Class Total

$

Good Day People… apparently this is the first problem that I came to this forum with but I couldn’t explain myself well. On my form there is a field that automatically calculates (average Marks). There are also fields that are supposed to give a class position (say 1,2,3 meaning 1st, 2nd, 3rd…..) based on the average marks of the student and a field that automatically populate itself (not really sure if I used the word rightly) with the number of people in the class (Folder).

An additional information is that more folders will be added to the DB in its operation (after exe compilation) ….. and I want the same effects (class total and class positions) on subsequent folders and records that will be added.

I have attached an Example. ATTACHED Example.zip

Dear all,
I have the query below that return a table like:
PLOTNR; period,Value, ID, Basal_area/ha, Basal_area/ha, perc_BA_sp

What I want to is to add another field that rank the perc_BA_sp by PLOTNR descending (thus highest perc_BA_sp values rank one etc.)
could help me out of this?

Hey Guys,

I have DB2 9.7 bundled with ITM. The "db2licm -l" shows DB2's license as:

Hi,

I have written this query but cant get the output to left justified.
Its a 10 character length output but its starting 5 spaces beyond the starting point. IS there a way to re-write it
so it start from the true starting point and I can pad at the end....thanks in advance

Here's the query:

REPLICATE(' ',10-LEN(
ISNULL(
CASE WHEN LTRIM(REPLACE(A.DIAGN1, '.','')) =''
THEN NULL
ELSE LTRIM(REPLACE(A.DIAGN1, '.',''))
END
, 'V689')
))+ISNULL(
CASE WHEN LTRIM(REPLACE(A.DIAGN1, '.','')) =''
THEN NULL
ELSE LTRIM(REPLACE(A.DIAGN1, '.',''))
END
, 'V689') AS PRIME_DIAGN_CODE, --ISNULL(LEFT(' '+REPLACE(A.DIAGN1, '.',''), 10), LEFT(''+'V689'
